At any rate, postmodernism managed to escape the confines of the academic world and terms such as 'postmodernity' and 'decon-struction' have passed into journalism and popular discourse. Postmodernism was received differently in the various social science and humanities disciplines. It was perhaps most significant in literary criticism but its impact was felt not only in disciplines such as sociology and history but it even touched economics and accountancy. Postmodernism not only affected each of the different disciplines to quite varying degrees but it made its impact upon them at earlier and later times.
So the key principle is conceded. I believe that among the realities that do not have causal powers are social structures. Why don't I think so? Because social structures do not exist in the way that powerful particulars must exist. The burden of my argument will be an attempt to hack my way through a tangle of metaphors to the drop of Wittgensteinian grammar into which a cloud of misleading metaphysics can be condensed. The point is not academic. I have lived long enough to have watched repeated attempts to ameliorate injustices and miseries based upon the fallacious idea that social structures are causally efficacious.
Causality is not Humean concomitance but agentive. The fact that the power is not observable in itself, but only in its effects, is, as Thomas Reid pointed out two hundred and fifty years ago, not an adequate ground for throwing it out as a sound ontological concept. What about the critical side? Well now we come to matters where Roy and I are in fundamental disagreement. I think that Roy thinks that not everything that is acknowledged to be real has causal powers. So the key principle is conceded.
